Pre Production

Intro

In this project those who wanted to pitch an idea to turn into a short did so. There were a variety of pitches all developed at different stages as we all have different interests. This was our second project so we were more confident this time around. Especially when choosing a pitch that best suited our group, would represent us as a team and overall was a good idea we liked. The idea we chose to go with was called “Amarok”, it was created and pitched by Shenaaz Suliman.

Roles

As we chose Shenaaz’s idea, it was only natural that she should be the director of this short film. The rest of our team mainly kept the same roles as we had a lot more experience from the last project so we wanted this new project to run more smoothly. It goes as follows: Josiah Martin- Lofters as our producer, Simone Fraser as our writer, Cameron Haley as our editor, Miriam Di Benedetto doing 3D layout and Shessy Idowu on lighting. With the exception of Nicole Widmer being the production designer, where she was the CG supervisor for our last project. This role was now filled by Harrison Bell as he was the director for our last project.

Writing our scripts

Once we decided what project idea we were going to choose Shenaaz our director explained how she envisaged the story to play out with the group, then Shenaaz and Simone our writer had a meeting to refine and write out a series of developed scripts.

Storyboarding

As we developed our script further it also meant we were able to advance with storyboarding, with the basic structure of the script completed already our director Shenaaz was able to put together a rough first storyboard.

Then as the script started to develop more and we received feedback from tutors and industry experts Shenaaz was able to compile a couple more variants of the storyboard, till we she was able to come up with a final version of the storyboard.

Character Design

When choosing what rigs to use, Shenaaz already had an idea of some she wanted to use as the story and location meant we needed ethnic looking characters. This consisted of the "Penelope" rig by Matthew Tovar, "Sam" rig by Gabriel Salas and the "Realistic Wolf" rig by Truong

For the character design of the project, Nicole was the person responsible for customizing all the rigs we chose to use due to the location our world took place in. It is very cold and consists of snow, so it was important that the characters were customized to be able to preside in the environment that was created.

Production Design

Before we started creating all the environments for our scenes and designing the sets, we needed to create some moodboards so that Miriam our 3D layout artist and Nicole, our production designer, knew what style the director was heading for.

Moodboards by Nicole Widmer, Production Designer

As the story takes place in a small town in Northern Canada, the environment needed to reflect not only the perpetual winter terrain, but also the culture of the region. We looked at inspirations from the First Nations and Inuit cultures of Canada as influence.

Once a theme was established and approved by the director, our 3D layout and set designer, Miriam Di Benedetto, was able to start putting together the 3D environments to enable us to begin production.
